My repeat piece of fashion advice to all of my mama-to be friends about is that the most important piece to buy in a maternity wardrobe is denim. And not just that, but premium denim that you’ll spend a little extra cash on. Here’s the reason… Premium denim brands are the gurus of denim so you know the cut, the fit and the material will be top quality (they know what they’re doing!). Most likely you’ll be wearing these jeans over and over again so you’ll want the quality to be the best so that they last and you’re not stuck restocking. The other positive is that the quality of denim plays a huge part in the stretch. You are going to be growing at a pretty fast rate and you grow out of clothing so quickly that you’ll want something that really can grow with you and last you until the bitter end when leggings are the only thing you can stand to pull over that big bump!
With the help of my friends at ShopBop, I’ve been able to find the perfect maternity denim for both of my pregnancies. The selection is really big and the returns are always so easy that it makes trying on and decision making a breeze in the privacy of your own bedroom. In my experience, I’ve found some brands like Citizens of Humanity, Rag & Bone (a newbie on the maternity market!) and DL 1961 are all great for chic styles that were close to my regular jeans, but they ran a bit small and I grew out of them quickly.
I also went for the side panels instead of over the belly style because I like to style a lot of my tops with a small 1/2 tuck and wanted to continue to do so in my pregnancy. It was totally just a personal style choice!
Brands such as Paige and J Brand, just like their regular denim, were the best go-to classic skinnies for me. They have amazing stretch and lasted all through both my entire pregnancies. They never faded and really stayed looking nice considering I really am making them work hard every time I squeeze my big belly and butt into them.
Just like any denim, all brands/styles fit different bodies in different ways so you have to try on and decide for yourself. But I promise if you invest in about 2-3 pair (1 casual destroyed, 1 blue solid skinny & 1 solid black) you’ll be happy that you spent your money on quality over quantity.
